Templepatrick’s Ben McKee produced an excellent drive in difficult conditions to claim the Richard Turtle Memorial Cup for the National Hot Rods at an excellent festive Aghadowey Oval meeting last Monday afternoon.

With a descending fog and a greasy track making the going very tricky, Ben showed the field a clean pair of heels to run out a clear winner. Other feature race winners were Ballymena’s Daniel Rodgers in the Thunder Rods, rising Cullybackey star Keegan Turtle in the Ninja Karts, Glenavy’s Dan Shannon in the Stock Rods and Bleary’s Drew McKeown in the 2.0 Hot Rods. The entertaining Caravan Destruction Derby fell to Strabane's Tony Gillespie.

A great field of sixteen National Hot Rods gathered to contest Round 6 of Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI and the Richard Turtle Memorial Cup. It is held each year in memory of the popular former star driver from Cullybackey. Amongst the grid was welcome Dublin visitor Les Compelli. Barry Stephen was the man to watch during the heats, the Scotsman grabbing the opener over Carl Sloan and John Christie before heading Shane Murray and Nigel McCauley home in heat two.
The final saw Stephen take the early lead until he was challenged by Ben McKee as they approached mid distance. After a tussle McKee went ahead, and pulled well clear as he revelled in the slippery conditions. A huge battle ensued for second, which finally fell the way of National Champion Derek Martin after a great outside run, with Stephen third ahead of Christie and Murray. Such was McKee’s lead that he was right amongst this battle to lap them as the chequered flag fell.

As always, the Stock Rods were on top form with the opening heat featuring a superb multi-car dice for the lead. Thomas Morrison held sway out front with Stevie McNiece, Victor McAfee, Mark Crawford and Jonny Cardwell just some of those attempting to get past. McNiece made the outside move stick with just three to go to claim a great win over Morrison and Crawford. Heat two saw McAfee set the pace for much of the way, before Cardwell found a gap on the last lap to claim the win over Victor and Stevie McNiece.
The final again saw a titanic battle out front, with Morrison holding sway before he went out with a puncture. That elevated McNiece to the lead but he then lost out to Crawford on the Brown Trout Bend. In the final analysis, Crawford was demoted by the Stewards for the manner in which he took the lead. That handed victory to second over the line Dan Shannon, ahead of Cardwell, the relegated Crawford and the very unlucky McNiece.

Three eventful races from the 2.0 Hot Rods entertained the crowds, with Garvagh’s Johnny McCloy breaking clear to win heat one over British Champion Conor Hughes and Irish Champion Jordan Rochford. Gary Fowler led heat two early on, before NI Points Champion Drew McKeown raced ahead to win over McCloy and Rochford.
The final saw a great battle between McCloy and McKeown for the lead, before they were joined by Hughes to make it a three way scrap. Hughes almost got past McCloy, but as they were side by side they ran wide which a driver of McKeown’s calibre was always going to seize upon. He nipped inside them both and ahead to take the silverware over Rochford and McCloy.

A full field of twenty Thunder Rods took to the grid, with returnee David Reynolds from Clough taking a tough fought heat one win over Daniel Rodgers and Ryan Murphy. An eventful second heat fell to Ricky Bradley over Murphy and Rodgers, and heading into the feature race final it was a tough call as to who would take the honours. On his comeback meeting, it was Ballymena driver Rodgers who was the man on a mission, as he relegated early leader Clifford Gordon to take a decisive win. Murphy and Gordon completed the placemen.

The Ninja Karts field was bolstered by England’s Jack Jones and Scottish racers Kenzie Bell and Tommy Melrose. The racing was fantastic all afternoon from the 6-11 year olds, with Crumlin’s Riley Dawson-Stirling taking the opening heat over World Champion Leyton Hughes and Keegan Turtle. Heat two saw Riley take his second win of the day, coming through late to snatch the victory with Hughes and Turtle again the placemen.
The final was a contender for race of the day, with Caolan Fegan setting a blistering pace out front with Charlie Johnston and Turtle chasing hard. The star men were struggling to get on terms from the rear of the grid, leaving the leading trio to fight it out between them. Just as he looked to have the trophy in the bag, Fegan hesitated ever so slightly in the backmarking traffic allowing the others to close on the run to the line. It was a real blanket finish with Turtle getting the nod and the winner’s trophy by just 0.042 seconds! Fegan had to make do with second ahead of Johnston and Hughes.

The exciting Caravan Destruction Derby completed the holiday programme, with the drivers driving through and over each other to absolutely destroy the caravans. The entertaining event was won by Tony Gillespie from Strabane with Ballymoney’s Ian Bolton starring with a big rollover to end his chances.

The cold, wet and windy weather couldn’t deter the drivers and hardy race fans who braved the elements at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday evening. Loughgall’s Matthew Weir and Dublin’s Stevo McGrath grabbed Irish Championship glory in the Junior Productions and Unlimited National Bangers respectively, whilst Antrim’s Leyton Hughes was crowned Champion of Champions in the Ninja Karts. Lee Davison took the Superstox Tullyroan Challenge Cup win, whilst fellow Portadown racer Jordan Rochford won the 2.0 Hot Rods final.

Local points champion Jack Morrow quickly hit the front in the Junior Productions Irish Championship, with Sam Percy, Callum Magill and Chelsy Rainey jostling for the top positions in the early exchanges. Matthew Weir had lost a lot of time in a lap one incident, but he was revelling in the wet conditions as he raced towards the front. Soon he was up to second, and after a great fight with Morrow it was Weir who hit the front. With the conditions suiting him perfectly, Matthew pulled out a big advantage to grab the chequered flag, the Derek McMillan Memorial Trophy and the right to wear the green roof for the next twelve months. Morrow and Callum Magill completed the podium ahead of Declan O’Connor.
The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw Stewart Hanna grab a deserved win over Callum Magill.

Mike Flaherty led early on in the Unlimited National Bangers Irish Championship race, before former World Champion Steven Bolton moved ahead. He soon had Stevo McGrath tracking his every move though, and when Steven hung out the tail end of his car it was just too inviting for McGrath who duly spun him from the lead. McGrath went on to take the coveted Irish title ahead of Jonny Rutherford and David Gurney.
McGrath also picked up the win in the Allcomers race over Flaherty, before the Stephen Bannon Memorial DD fell to Tony Gillespie.

Despite the weekend storm and the chaos with ferries, a large number of mainland UK visitors still joined the local Ninja Kart stars for the evening. The opening race was the annual Individual Achievement Award for those who hadn’t won a race during the season, and it fell to Crumlin’s Riley Dawson-Stirling ahead of Noah Teggart and Ben Hawe.
The Champion of Champions event saw a big grid of Karts battling for honours, with World Champion Leyton Hughes coming through to take the win ahead of Scottish duo Jack Connor and Kenzie Bell. England’s Christian Murray then took the support heat victory ahead of Charlie Johnston.
The meeting final saw Murray again set the pace, but as the laps dwindled down the pack were closing in. On the last lap Murray crashed out as they made their way through heavy backmarking traffic, leaving the door open for Connor to race through for a great victory over England’s Charlie Weston and Dawson-Stirling at the end of a great evening of Ninja Kart racing from the kids.

Another fine field of Superstox included English visitor Declan Salmon and the new Irish Champion Jordan Robinson. Heat one saw Brian Lammey lead the way before teenager Graham Meek swept past to take the win over Lee Davison and Craig McConnell. Heat two saw Robinson take the win ahead of Davison and Salmon, which was enough to claim pole position for the final for Davison.
The Tullyroan Challenge Cup final saw an action packed opening lap, but Davison had made the perfect start to move ahead. Lee easily swept home to take the win, with Salmon impressing in second ahead of Kyle Beattie and Curtis Greer.

The 2.0 Hot Rods saw a brace of heat wins for Broughshane’s David Kernohan, before Irish Champion Jordan Rochford took a fine victory in the feature race of the evening over Drew McKeown and Denver Grattan.

Conditions were nothing short of atrocious at Aghadowey Oval on Friday night with Storm Arwen bringing in gale force winds and heavy, wintery showers. The drivers coped admirably on track, with Irish Championship titles falling to Portadown duo Nigel Jackson (Lightning Rods) and Jordan Robinson (Superstox), whilst Chris Hamill from Gawley’s Gate and Garvagh’s Dean Catherwood also tasted Irish title glory in the 1300 Stock Cars and Thunder Rods respectively. The supporting Stock Rods saw a final win for Kells driver Shane McMillan.

With conditions as bad as could be expected, grip was at a premium as the Lightning Rods set off for the Irish Championship race. Pole sitter Nigel Jackson just couldn’t get the power down as Ricky Shaw edged ahead with Ally Neill following him through. Jackson isn’t World Champion for no reason, and he soon settled down and swooped right around the outside to take up the running.
As Nigel edged clear to take his eighth Lightning Rods Irish title, Neill and Mark McCambridge came through to complete the podium. McCambridge then went on to win the Irish Revenge race from Jackson and Shaw.

A fantastic grid of Superstox set off for their Irish title race, with Lee Davison settling into the lead whilst Jordan Robinson headed a squabbling pack on the slippery surface. Robinson managed to break clear and chase down the leader, edging Davison wide with just four laps to go to take up the running.
As Robinson took a fantastic and well deserved title victory, Davison and Kyle Beattie completed the podium finishers. The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw a fantastic battle between Craig McConnell, Beattie and Robinson, with Jordan again coming out on top to record his second win of the evening.

Polesitter Chris Hamill got shunted wide in a dramatic opening lap of the 1300 Stock Cars Irish Championship, with Jon McQuillan and then Robbie Wright having spells out front. Hamill was coming back strong though, and he bided his time before making the perfect move on the final bend to dislodge Wright from the lead and take a great win. Joining the duo on the Irish title podium was Gareth Halliday who took a creditable third. The Irish Revenge support race then also fell the way of Hamill after a great battle amongst the pack.

The Thunder Rods Irish Championship was an eagerly awaited event, with so many possible contenders. Samuel Murphy led early on ahead of Dean Catherwood and defending champion James Goldie. The slightest slip from Murphy in the treacherous conditions saw Catherwood and Goldie move through, and despite Goldie’s best efforts to retain his title it was Catherwood who stormed home to take the Irish crown and the right to wear the green roof for the next twelve months. Goldie and Murphy completed the podium, before Simon McLaughlin took the Irish Revenge race ahead of Catherwood and Andrew McLean.

The Stock Rods were a late addition to the programme and it was Ballymena stalwart Victor McAfee who took the opening heat win, before Ballymoney’s Thomas Morrison took heat two in what was a blanket finish after a great race amongst the frontrunners. The final saw a lot of oil go down on the already slippery surface after a huge engine blow up for Michael Rodgers, with Kells star Shane McMillan coping best to take the victory over Jonny Cardwell and Morrison.
