In the Superstox, their latest regrading has been published with 914 Lee Davison holding a healthy lead at the top of the Mk2 Escort Shells & Spares NI Points Championship. 955 Kyle Beattie holds second spot ahead of 907 Jamie McCann and 943 Steven Haugh.

Broughshane’s Jaimie McCurdy put his recent run of poor form firmly behind him with a decisive victory in the National Hot Rods Final at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday night. On a night of great racing, there was an emotional victory for Lee Davison as he won his brother Neil’s Memorial Cup in the Superstox, whilst Dublin’s Jonathan Compelli took the honours in the 2L National Bangers Tullyroan Challenge Cup.
A great race for the lead in the Ninja Karts Tullyroan Challenge Cup saw Antrim’s Leyton Hughes just snatch the win, whilst Glenavy’s Mark McCambridge took the honours in a controversial Lightning Rods final.

The very healthy Ulster National Hot Rod scene was bolstered by yet another new recruit, Antrim’s Dean McCrory, for Round 3 of Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI. Scotsman Barry Stephen drew first blood with victory in the opening heat over Carl Sloan, before Ian McReynolds led them all home for a fine heat two victory over European Champion Shane Murray and Simon Kennedy.
Stephen set a great pace at the start of the final, but soon had Jaimie McCurdy chasing his tail as they headed towards half distance. Sloan was right there too, as was Murray until the latter was eliminated by the Stewards for a loose door on his Ginetta. McCurdy powered clear out front as Stephen faltered, Jaimie taking the chequered flag for a morale boosting victory over Sloan and Adam Hylands.

The first running of the Neil Davison Memorial Cup for Superstox saw a fine grid take to the track, including former World Champion Barry Stephen who doubled up with the National Hot Rods to give himself a very busy evening! James Stewart was the star man during the heats, the sixteen-year-old racing clear to claim victory in both to qualify on the pole position for the final. In the opening heat he bumpered Conor Murphy wide on the final lap to take the lead, before a more decisive win in heat two.
The setting was dramatic under the floodlights as the cars came to grid for the first running of the event, held in memory of the former racer who sadly passed away a year ago through illness. Stewart was spun off straight away as the green flag came out, as Neil’s brother and British Champion Lee Davison powered ahead. A huge crash in the main pack brought out the yellow flags, and at the resumption Davison again eased ahead to land an emotional win that visibly meant so much to him. It was the perfect result with a family one-two as Jordan Robinson came through to the runner up slot, ahead of Stephen in third.

There was some frantic action during the 2L National Bangers Tullyroan Challenge Cup race, with some huge hits handed out all around the circuit. Jonathan Compelli broke clear early on to move ahead, with second man Leonard Dunn eliminated late in the race on the home straight. As Jonathan took the win, his brother Paul Compelli came through for runner up ahead of Paul Stafford.
The Allcomers race was another hard hitting affair, with Dunn somehow managing to return to the grid after some sterling efforts in the pit area. He even had a spell out front early on before Mike Flaherty took over, but it was Jonny Murdock who got the win at the flag over Stevo McGrath. The Destruction Derby again saw Dunn take to the grid when it had looked as though his day was over, and he played his part in a great event with McGrath and Murdock. McGrath got the verdict and the win at the death with Dunn’s heroics, both on and off track, earning him the Entertainer of the Day.

A four car battle right to the line in a fantastic Ninja Kart opener saw Ryan Abernethy just get the verdict ahead of Ryan Berry and Noah Teggart, before newly crowned British Champion Leyton Hughes won the second heat with Berry and Teggart the placemen once again.
The Tullyroan Challenge Cup final turned into a tremendous dice between Hughes and Berry, with absolutely nothing between them all the way. They swapped the lead time and again, but it was Hughes who got ahead when it mattered to take the win despite Berry’s best efforts on the final turn. Ryan should be very proud of his efforts, as the ‘Ninja Master’ Leyton added yet another trophy to his collection.

A very good entry of Lightning Rods was boosted by welcome visitor Adrian Gleeson from Tipperary, with Mark Corry making good use of his drop to blue grade with a fine heat one victory over Ally Neill. Neill then went one better in heat two, taking the chequered flag in front of Ronan McNally and European Champion Aaron Stewart after a great run around the outside line.
Peter Wehrly and then Dylan McCann had spells out front in the final, before Corry’s speed carried him onto the tail of the leading car. Mark worked his way onto the outside line chasing the lead but McCann totally misjudged his line out onto the back straight and ran Corry up the wall and out of the race. McCann too had damage, and that took him out of the race before the Stewards could intervene. Suddenly Mark McCambridge found himself ahead, and he withstood late pressure from Aaron Stewart to take a win that looked so unlikely only a few laps previously.

A huge weekend of oval racing was enjoyed by drivers and fans alike over two days of competition at both DMC Race Promotions circuits. The action commenced at Aghadowey Oval on Saturday before continuing at Tullyroan Oval on Sunday. The big winner of the weekend was Ballinderry ace Jonny Cardwell, who scooped the Stock Rods British Championship title whilst England’s Jack Witts won both the Irish Championship and Irish Masters in the visiting National Ministox formula. The latest round of the National Hot Rods World Series NI saw Portadown’s Adam Hylands come out victorious at Tullyroan on Sunday.

A huge field of Stock Rods assembled for the 2021 British Championship, with three qualifying heats shared between defending champion Derek McMillan, Jonny Cardwell and Adam McFall. Siobhan Martin from Scotland qualified on pole and led the final early on, before Cardwell found a gap on the inside that edged Siobhan wide and ultimately out of the race. A number of caution periods couldn’t dislodge Cardwell from the top spot, and he raced home to the chequered flag, and his first major title victory, ahead of McMillan. Stevie McNiece claimed third spot after a raft of penalties were handed out amongst the pack for contact.

Sunday saw the Irish Open Championship up for grabs for the formula, with McMillan and young Randalstown star Sam McNeice claiming the heats wins. McMillan then powered away from the front of the grid in the final, taking victory over impressive sixteen-year-old McNeice with Scottish lady racer Martin in third.
National Ministox

Playing a great supporting role was the first Ulster visit of the National Ministox. The formula, more regularly seen on the English circuits, put on a great show in their awesome little ironed-up Mini’s, with the Irish Championship up for grabs at Aghadowey on Saturday. Jaden Key and Joelan Maynard (twice) shared the three heats, before the drivers lined up under the floodlights for the inaugural LJN Designs sponsored Irish decider. Sam Critchley set the early pace ahead of Cody Hanson, before a caution period brought the star graders into contention. Multi-champion Jack Witts quickly hit the front on the restart, fending off Kasey Jones to land the title, with Lewis Smith taking third.
Sunday saw even more exciting racing on the Tullyroan circuit, with some fantastic action as Cody Hanson, Maynard and Critchley shared the heat wins. Local racer Abbie McKinstry joined the ranks for the weekend and she led early on in the final before being ousted by Critchley. Witts and Leah Sealy were heading the rush for the front from the superstar grade, and Jack duly hit the top spot to take his second title win of the weekend over Sealy and Evan Bullock. The National Ministox really proved a hit with the local fans and everyone will look forward to a return visit in 2022.

The Junior Productions were racing for the Irish Open Championship, with Ballymena ace Aaron Ward taking the opening heat win ahead of Scotland’s Koddi Wright. Jack Morrow made short work of the second heat to take the honours over Sam Percy and Callum Magill. With similar results in the heats, Morrow won the toss with Ward for pole position in the Irish open final, Jack then racing clear to take the title in style. Percy finished second on the road but was docked two places for contact, handing the runner up slot to Wright with Ward taking third.

On Sunday Ward took victory in the Tullyroan Challenge Cup after a penalty was handed down to on the road winner Morrow. That elevated Ward, who had earlier shared the heat wins with Andrew Woods, to the top step of the podium, with Chelsy Rainey taking second ahead of the demoted Morrow.

On the sun drenched Tullyroan bowl on Sunday the National Hot Rods produced some great racing, with Adam Hylands powering past Nigel McCauley to take the opening heat win. There was a great finish to heat two, with a popular win going the way of Andrew Stewart just ahead of Hylands and McCauley. Hylands then stamped his authority all the final of Round 2 of the Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI, taking a decisive win over Shane Murray, John Christie and Glenn Bell.

Support action at Aghadowey on Saturday saw NI Points Champion Drew McKeown from Portadown take the honours in the second round of the 2.0 Hot Rods Hoosier Tyres Series in a superb wet weather drive, after Broughshane’s Davy Kernohan has scored a brace of heat wins. In the Lightning Rods there was also a double heat winner in Ballymena’s Daniel Rodgers, before Portadown’s Ronan McNally came through to take the feature race honours.

Sunday at Tullyoan also saw the Rookie Bangers in action, with Garvagh’s William McFaul grabbing a heat and final double amongst a big field of cars. The other heat fell to Josh Goligher amidst the carnage, with McFaul then getting the better of long time leader Matthew Milliken in the final.

Ahead of their upcoming World Championship at Lochgelly, the 2020/21 Autoweld NI Points Championship for 1300 has now concluded. After a toughly fought season, young star 888 Jonathan Brown has been crowned as NI Points Champion, ahead of 33 Jon McQuillan and 127 Jonny Patterson.
