World Championship Tops Aghadowey Oval Summer Speedweekend |

Northern Ireland’s biggest oval racing event of the season take place at Aghadowey Oval this weekend, headlined by the prestigious World Championship for 2.0 Hot Rods.
Also up for decision during the weekend will be the Stock Rods British Championship and Ninja Karts European Championship.
Following practice on Friday evening July 19th, racing takes place on Saturday July 20th from 4pm and then on Sunday 21st from 1pm.
2.0 Hot Rods
Portadown’s defending World Champion Jordan Rochford tops the entry for the Cherry Pipes 2.0 Hot Rods World Championship, as he aims for a hat-trick of World titles having been victorious in Scotland and England over the past two seasons. Armed with a new car this season, he will be keen to hold onto the gold roof. Recently crowned British Champion Drew McKeown from Bleary will be another favourite, alongside Irish Champion Conor Hughes (Antrim) and Wayne Woolsey, Ryan McCrory and Andy Best.
English star Jason Jackson leads the visiting entry, and ‘Boxer Jack’ as he is affectionately known is sure to go close. Essex based European Champion Ben Murray knows the Aghadowey track well and will be joined by Jack Wilks, Harry Smith, Chevy Mills and Damian Wright from England, whilst Jason Secker, Keith Brown, Frankie Cunningham and David Frame head the Scottish challenge. Cork’s Ian Riordan heads a strong Republic of Ireland invasion, fresh from winning the Inter-Nations Cup at Ipswich recently.
Stock Rods
Nutts Corner racer Mark Crawford is another chasing a hat-trick of titles, this time in the Cherry Pipes Stock Rods British Championship. Like Rochford, he has won in Scotland and England over the past two years, and will hope his local knowledge will see him make it three in a row. Mark also finished a creditable second in the recent World Championship event in Ipswich.
Glenavy’s NI points Champion Dan Shannon will be another to watch, as will Jonny Cardwell who has tasted British glory in recent times. European Champion Joe Largey is another set to shine, as will Irish Champion Stevie McNiece. Young Randalstown star Sam McNeice will be another hoping for glory, alongside Larne’s Sam Wilson and local favourite Victor McAfee.
World Champion John Smith from London hopes to make the trip across to head the English challenge, alongside former English Champion Daniel Rea, Luke Oliver, Dave Burton and George Baker. Heading a very large Scottish entry is former World title holder Siobhan Martin who always runs well at Aghadowey, alongside Dean McGill who led the recent World Final for much of the distance. Scottish Champion Gary Dean, David Crichton, Sean Naismith and Robbie Armit are also amongst the tartan travellers, whilst Paddy O’Dwyer and Sean Maher head the Republic of Ireland contingent.
Ninja Karts
Ahoghill’s recently crowned World Champion Lewis Hazlett will be the star attraction in the ABC Recovery Ninja Karts European Championship, which boasts a capacity entry from far and wide. Cullybackey’s Keegan Turtle will also be chasing his European dream, as will Co Armagh’s Jack Murphy, Larne duo Tommy Johnston and Kori Curran, Ollie Williamson (Portadown) and Portaferry’s Alan Beattie.
British Champion Jaxon York from the Midlands heads a ten strong English attack whilst Tommy Melrose and Jayden Lee Jeffrey top a quality Scottish challenge. The young stars will also race for the Irish Open Championship during the weekend.
Support Racing
The elite National Hot Rods contest the opening round of World Series NI on the Sunday afternoon, as Galgorm’s Shane Murray opens the defence of his title. Superstox, Thunder Rods and 1300 Stock Cars will also be in action during the two day festival of stock car racing.
