Martin Stars On Night Of Double Victories At Aghadowey
Dungannon’s Derek Martin was on top form at Aghadowey Oval on Friday evening, taking a polished heat and final double in Round 13 of the Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI. It was a night of doubles, with the McKnight Motors of Coagh sponsored meetings also seeing braces of wins for Cookstown’s Brian Cherry in the 2.0 Hot Rods, Loughgall’s Jordan McCann in the Stock Rods and Bushmills’ Dylan Booth in the Thunder Rods. The race fans also enjoyed a breathtaking display during the meeting from the Wild Geese Skydive Team.

The stakes were high as Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI for the National Hot Rods reached the penultimate round, with the drama commencing during practice as series favourite Adam Hylands suffered terminal engine issues which ended his night. Kenny McCann and Adam Heatrick had spells out front in the opening heat, before Broughshane’s Jaimie McCurdy powered through to take the win over Keith Martin and Derek Martin. McCurdy and Gary Woolsey had a tough scrap for the premier spot in heat two, before Derek Martin arrived on the scene to swoop past to a thrilling win over Woolsey and Keith Martin.
McCurdy had a great launch off the line in the final from the outside of the front row, but polesitter Derek Martin held firm to hold him off into turn one. Derek then got his head down and pulled clear out front, reeling off the laps to take a well deserved victory. He even survived a mid race caution period but pulled clear once again, taking the flag over his uncle Keith. Glenn Bell had a thrilling finish on the outside line to snatch third on the road, but he lost out to a penalty for jumping the restart. That handed John Christie third spot which vaults him to the lead of the World Series points chart.

Another healthy showing of 2.0 Hot Rods produced some exciting action, with 16 year old Drew McKeown withstanding some huge pressure from behind to take the opening heat victory. Ryan McClure, Stephen Emerson and Adam Best chased him over the line in a blanket finish. Dean McFarland led heat two before losing out to Brian Cherry, with Dean then rashly turned aside by McClure which earned him a disqualification. Cherry raced home for a great win ahead of Thomas Dilly and McKeown.
The final was another Cherry benefit, as Brian really got his 2019 season up and running by taking a commanding win which elevates him up the gradings for the next meeting. McKeown once again impressed in second ahead of Conor Hughes and Emerson.

The huge entries in the Stock Rods continued, with 26 cars producing wheel to wheel racing all evening. Del McLaughlin led the opener away and stayed out front until challenged by Philip Wilson. Wilson eventually managed to get past and make the move stick, taking the flag ahead of Jordan McCann and Johnny Gillespie. Heat two was another toughly fought encounter at the head of the field, with Johnny McCloy this time taking a very impressive win over McCann and Gary Butler.
Former ProStocks star McCann quickly went ahead in the final from pole position, with Butler soon moving through to track his every move. There was drama late on as they encountered some awkward backmarking traffic, with McCann getting himself involved with Stuart Agnew. Jordan reeled off the remaining laps to take the win over Butler and former World Champion Marc Morrell, even surviving a post race investigation into his altercation with the backmarkers.

Completing the programme were the Thunder Rods, which saw Dylan Booth race to a fine heat one win over Andy McLeister and Jerome Doherty, with David Gurney posing a late threat on the outside line. Heat two saw probably the easiest win of the evening, this time for Steven Elder who coasted home ahead of Booth and Josh Goligher.
The final opened in controversial fashion, with Gareth McCrory getting spun off which earned Gurney a disqualification. Booth was the man in the box seat once again in this one, and he used all his experience to hold off a determined challenge from McLeister to take the win. Behind the leading duo, Doherty and Elder filled the next places over the line.

Many thanks to our meeting sponsors, McKnight Motors of Coagh
