A bumper holiday crowd enjoyed the oval racing action at Aghadowey Oval on Boxing Day, including an excellent Caravan Destruction Derby that saw a fabulous 20 cars and caravans reduced to wreckage around the raceway. Local man John Moore took the honours amidst the carnage, whilst the other big winner of the day was Bushmills man JayJay McConaghie as he took victory in a drama filled Reliant Robins Irish Championship. Other feature race wins at the meeting, sponsored by Maggies Garage of Ballycastle, were Gary Butler (Stock Rods), Shane Murray (2.0 Hot Rods), Ronnie White (Thunder Rods) and Drew McKeown (Junior Productions).

The competitors for the 2015 Reliant Robins Irish Championship were lined up in points order from during the season, with Ballymoney's Ian Bolton and Broughshane's Sammy Graham sharing the front row. They quickly battled for the lead, before the two favourites continued their fierce rivalry and spun out of contention in unison. That handed the lead to Billy McClean, with JayJay McConaghie following his every move. They swapped the lead on numerous occasions before the yellow flags came out for Clint Murray's rollover on the back straight. Bolton and Graham were coming back through the field at speed, but they then tangled in the start line which launched both into orbit approaching turn one in a spectacular shunt. At the restart McConaghie was able to keep McClean at arm's length to land the coveted Irish Championship trophy, with Peter Greer coming through for third.
The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw another rollover for Murray with Andrew Blair doing likewise, as McConaghie again took victory. Bolton had returned for this race, but he later ended up in hospital as a result of his injuries from the earlier crash. We all wish him well and hope to see him back on track in the near future.

The slippery track caught out a few of the competitors early in the opening Stock Rod heat, with a full restart called with Ed Davis hard in the wall on turn four, ending his afternoon. At the second time of asking former World Champion Chris Gordon set the initial pace, before National Champion Derek McMillan swooped past to take the win in impressive style. His brother Shane took second ahead of Victor McAfee at the flag. Derek McMillan was again the fastest car on track in heat two, but he had to settle for second this time behind a flying Ben McCully, with Shane McMillan again impressing in third.
The final was another excellent if somewhat controversial affair, with Shane McMillan settling into the lead after demoting Bobbie Johnston early on. McCully was tracking Shane's every move, and went ahead but also attracted a black cross warning from the starter for his troubles. Derek McMillan was now breathing right down McCully's neck, with Best in Britain McAfee also valiantly trying his luck on the outside. They couldn't unseat the leader though, but on the final bend McCully and Derek McMillan tripped over each other which allowed Dubliner Gary Butler to outdrag them to the line for the win in a dramatic finish. Derek and Ben both fell foul of Race Control and were docked two places each in the final analysis, handing second and third to Marc Morrell and Shane McMillan.

The Thunder Rods had three keenly contested races, with the early pace in each set by Broughshane's Robert Clyde on his first outing on the oval in 25 years! Mark McLaughlin moved ahead to take victory in the opening heat despite the efforts of runner up Samuel Montgomery, before veteran racer Ronnie White won the second over Lee McCloy and Clyde. White had enough experience in his locker to cope with the tricky conditions which prevailed when the rain returned for the final, easing ahead of the field to win at a canter over Montgomery and Peter Henderson.

A depleted field of 2.0 Hot Rods meant easy World Championship qualifying points for those in attendance, and it was lone blue grader Allen Cherry who grabbed both heat wins. Former double World Champion Shane Murray chased him home in both races, setting up an intriguing final with Cherry now elevated to the red grade. Cherry got the initial jump before slithering wide out onto the back straight, which opened the door for NI Points Champion Adam Heatrick to take up the running. Murray then got a run down Heatrick's inside down the back straight to ease into a led he would never lose. Cherry, Heatrick and Wayne Woolsey chased him home at the chequered flag.

The Junior Productions were also well down in numbers, with Irish Champion Drew McKeown taking a hat-trick of wins despite the excellent efforts of Matthew Nicholl.

A fantastic 20 cars and caravans came under starters order for the huge Holiday Caravan Destruction Derby, including brave lady racers Hailey McFaul and Lisa McAleese. The carnage was on a monumental scale right from the off, with the caravans obliterated right around the circuit! Local driver John Moore emerged from the chaos as the last man standing and the winner, after another sensational event drew the meeting to a close.
