Quinn Wins British Title After Aghadowey Thriller

Suffolk driver Korben Quinn was the toast of Aghadowey Oval on Saturday night, October 10th, when he took victory in an action packed 1400 Stock Cars British Championship. The other big winner of the evening was Richhill’s Jack Murphy who successfully defended the Ninja Karts Irish Championship title.
Other feature race winners on the night were Cork’s Darragh O’Shea (Stock Rods), Portadown’s Steven Haugh (Superstox) and Ballymoney’s Liam Irwin (Thunder Rods).

1400 Stock Cars
A large and quality field of 1400 Stock Cars came to Aghadowey from across the British Isles to contest the first ever staging of the British Championship in Northern Ireland. The first of two graded qualifying heats fell to Randalstown’s Ty Richardson ahead of England’s Dan Santry and Cullybackey’s former World Champion Curtis Greer. The second heat was every bit as good as the first, and this time Coleraine’s Alexander McCreadie sped clear for a popular win over Scottish pair Brant West and Ally Strachan.
Greer returned to ninth in heat two and on aggregate points he claimed pole position for the British Championship showdown, with Matthew Weir alongside. What followed was a truly sensational race, with the bumpers flying in and lead changes galore!

Greer led them away and got the early break, but behind there was huge action as cars clattered off the fence around the track. A big turn four crash saw a caution period called, after which Greer got bundled down the order. Scottish Champion Fraser Clark and Weir both had spells ahead before another caution was called. Matthew Milliken then hit the front as the tension was upped another notch, with Gareth Halliday then going for a big home straight rollover which brought the yellows back out again.
There were more exchanges out front at the resumption, with Milliken and Clark trading blows and places before Englishman Korben Quinn arrived on the scene and slipped ahead. He pulled clear over the remaining laps to take a sensational victory from eighteenth on the grid. Milliken took a creditable second ahead of another English driver in Luke Gordon. Clark, Strachan and Josh McKinstry were next home at the end of a thrilling event.
The night was rounded off by an Allcomers race, which saw Greer take the win from the rear of the line up.

Ninja Karts
Ollie Williamson and Jack Murphy shared the front row for the Ninja Karts Irish Championship, with Williamson the first to show from Harry Hoy. Murphy soon got up to speed, and he slipped under Ollie into the pit bend to take up the running and race home to defend his title in some style. Williamson, Hoy, Jordan Davis and William Brown completed the places.
The reverse grid Irish Revenge race saw Frankie Stirling ahead for much of the distance, before Murphy came from the back of the line up to take another super win over Williamson and Cahan Bradley.
Stock Rods
A huge shower of rain before the opening Stock Rods heat made the going treacherous to say the least, but Callum Magill coped superbly to win from Harry Minish and Jamie Cardwell. Magill then repeated the feat in heat two, this time ahead of Sam Wilson and Darragh O’Shea.
The final saw Wilson lead for much of the race, even after a mid-race caution, but with just five laps to run O’Shea got the run under him to charge clear for a fine victory. Minish and Ryan Jackson, who had both gambled on the outside line at the restart, filled the podium slots.

Superstox
Neil Hyndman led the opening Superstox heat before British and Irish Champion Jordan Robinson powered home to win from World Champion Jamie McCann. Heat two was right from the top drawer, with Robinson and Hyndman trading the lead several times, before Steven Haugh nipped past both on the last lap to take a sensational win.
Ethan Martin impressed for much of the final, leading the way as he showed some excellent pace. Haugh was gradually closing him down and he found a gap with two to go to take the win, smashing the lap record in the process. Robinson and Martin completed the podium.

Thunder Rods
Another great entry of Thunder Rods put on some excellent racing, with Jason McMullan hitting the outside to win the opener in style from long time leader Liam Irwin. Heat two saw a truly spectacular outside line drive from Andrew Mclean net him the win ahead of Liam Wilson and Irwin.
Irwin hit the front in the final and invited the rest to take him on. He held firm on the inside line whilst Adam Graham, Lee McCloy and James Steele all failed to find a way past on the outside. Irwin held sway all the way to the chequered flag for a very creditable win indeed, with McCloy, Mark McLaughlin and Steele next home.
