Hamill Hurtles To Boxing Day Treble!
Kells driver Chris Hamill marked his return to racing with a faultless hat-trick at the Aghadowey Oval Boxing Day meeting, grabbing victories in both Stock Rod heats and the final in some style. In somewhat slippery conditions all afternoon, young Portadown star Max Hobson won the Ninja Karts Stars of Tomorrow Challenge whilst the other winners at the Select Catering sponsored meeting were Lucas Goligher (Thunder Rods), Kyle Beattie (Superstox) and Stephen Boyd (Back to Basics Bangers). To round off an entertaining meeting, event supremo Dessie Dallas took yet another victory in the exciting Caravan Destruction Derby.
Stock Rods
The opening Stock Rods heat was suspended on the opening lap as Rick Purdy found the home straight wall and was very lucky not to rollover. Robert McIlroy was the early pacesetter, but he had no answer to World Champion Derek McMillan who surged past to take the flag. Unfortunately for Derek he was adjudged to have jumped the early restart and was duly docked two positions, handing the win to Chris Hamill over Marc Morrell. Heat two was another hectic encounter amongst the packed grid, with Hamill powering ahead early on in this one to take the win over Samuel Montgomery.

Hamill had annexed pole spot for the final with Morrell alongside, and Chris quickly assumed the lead. Very soon he had the squabbling star men of McMillan and Curtis Greer on his case, but Chris held his nerve to hold them off all the way home to complete his hat-trick. McMillan, Greer and Dan Shannon rounded out the major places.
Ninja Karts

The opening Ninja Karts heat saw a first ever win in the category for Dungannon’s Ryan Abernethy Jnr, as he led home welcome English visitor Jack Jones. Abernethy then repeated the feat in heat two, relieving early leader Jones of the top spot to lead home star men Max Hobson and Leyton Hughes to the flag.

The Stars of Tomorrow Challenge Final saw Jones hit the front before Ryan Berry superbly swooped ahead. Ryan looked secure out front before a spin on the exit of the pits bend handed the lead back to Jones. The star men were coming like a train from the rear of the grid now, Hobson hitting the front ahead of Hughes. Irish Champion Hughes then found a way to the head of the field, before a superb move from Hobson saw him regain the lead and take a fabulous win in his last ever Ninja Karts race as he soon hits the upper age limit. Hughes was a gallant runner up ahead of the impressive Jones in third, and in a nice touch the retiring Hobson’s family presented all the drivers with Christmas goodie bags.

Novice Lucas Goligher led away the opening Thunder Rods heat, but he lost out to a flying William Donnell who took the win over Goligher and Davy Gurney. Goligher wasn’t to be denied in heat two though, racing home well clear of Norman Purdy and Donnell.

Goligher led the final until Purdy arrived on his tail with just a couple of laps to go. With the outside line very treacherous, Norman looked for a gap down the inside but only succeeded in punting Goligher into a half spin. Purdy raced past to take the flag but was docked two places for the contact, handing the victory back to Goligher ahead of Davy Wilson and the demoted Purdy.

A disappointing field of Superstox included welcome English star Murray Jones, but it was Irish Champion Kyle Beattie who excelled all afternoon. He took all three wins at a canter from the rear of the field, with Darren Bevan, David Beattie and Jones following him home in the final.

The Back to Basics Bangers included English star Joey Reynolds in his 87th meeting of 2019, as he chases the all time UK record for events contested. Stephen Boyd took the opening heat win, avoiding the antics of the others all around the track, whilst Josh Goligher then took the flag in heat two.
The final saw Goligher pull clear and look odds on for the trophy, until he was baulked late on by the backmarking Reynolds. That allowed Boyd to sneak past to snatch the victory by the narrowest of margins!

The usual carnage ensued in the crazy Caravan Derby, with the drivers driving into, and sometimes through, the caravans to leave an almighty mess around the track. It boiled down to a shoot out between Dessie Dallas and Enda Ferris, with event specialist Dallas taking another win when Ferris’ Citroen expired.
