Dublin based ‘Team Sour A’ were victorious in an entertaining Rookie Bangers Irish Teams Championship at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday evening. Paul O’Connor took the final win to help his outfit to the teams title, whilst the other victories at the George Fegan Tyres of Belfast sponsored meeting fell to Kilrea’s Joshua McMullan in the Thunder Rods, Newtownabbey’s Aaron McNeilly in the Superstox, Glenavy’s Dan Shannon in the ProStocks and Birches driver Robbie Wright in the 1300 Stock Cars.

The Rookie Bangers racing was action packed all evening, with the rapid Peter McConnell from Team Chancers taking the opening heat ahead of The Hooligans’ Josh Goligher and Paul O’Connor from Team Sour A. Phillip Farrell steered his way to heat two victory for The Hooligans over Deano McGrath and McConnell, leaving the points delicately poised heading into the final.
O’Connor made a quick getaway in the feature race, leaving the rest trailing in his wake as he negotiated the carnage amongst the pack. Paul raced home to the win with his Team Sour A team mate Ger O’Beirne riding shotgun in second. That was enough to allow the Dublin based team to successfully defend their title, with The Hooligans in second ahead of Team Chancers.

The Thunder Rods made their first visit of the season to Tullyroan with an excellent twenty car grid. William Donnell took the opening heat victory in only the second outing for his new car, fending off a spirited outside line challenge from David Wilson with Jason Darragh in close company in third. The reversed grid heat two saw Gavin Gamble lead for much of the distance, before he lost out to a hard charging Christopher Baird. Baird took the win over Joshua McMullan and Gamble.
The Tullyroan Challenge Cup final paired Wilson and Donnell on the front row, on what was a very difficult track after the Bangers had laid down copious amounts of fluid. Donnell got the better of Wilson early on, using the cleaner outside line to get ahead. Wilson fought back in determined fashion, with McMullan getting in on the act too. Joshua worked his way to second and then hit the front after a great run around the outside of Donnell. As Joshua edged clear to take the win, Wilson’s determined drive came to nothing as he lost ground late on. That left Donnell to collect the runner up trophy ahead of James Goldie in third.

The Superstox saw World Champion Lee Davison debut his superb new RCE car, only to be unfortunately sidelined during heat one with a blown engine. Novice grader David Beattie was the man to watch in the opener, spinning fellow front starters Paddy Murphy and Darren Bevan to race clear to the win. Aaron McNeilly and Conor Murphy chased him home. Beattie was again well clear in heat two only for mechanical issues to force him into retirement. That left Conor Murphy out front, but the fast moving Jordan Robinson moved ahead with three laps to go to take the victory over McNeilly and C Murphy.
The final saw Darren Bevan impressively lead early on, before McNeilly swooped to take up the running. Robinson found a way past C Murphy to go second at the mid point, but despite closing on the leader it was McNeilly who took a well deserved victory after a fine drive. Robinson was great value in second ahead of C Murphy, with Stephen Stewart the first star man home in fourth.

Teenage novice grader Gareth Halliday was the star turn in the 1300 Stock Car heats, taking both victories with ease to earn himself a rise to the yellow grade for the final. In the opener Ryan Stewart and Calvin Blake chased him home, whilst Jack Kearney and Robbie Wright filled the places in the second heat.
The final was the second round of the Ryan Wright Signs Iron Man Series, and it saw a great battle early on between Halliday, Kearney and Stewart. Blake then arrived on the scene with a big hit to unsettle all three and take up the running. Recently crowned Open Scottish Champion Robbie Wright was soon on his tail, the pair swapping blows and the lead before Wright made good his escape to take the flag and a new race tyre courtesy of the series sponsors. Blake and Nicky Lowry rounded out the podium finishers.

As always the ProStocks entertained as they contested the Tullyroan Challenge Cup. David McKinnon and Iain Browne contested the lead in the first heat before losing out to Sam Stewart, but star man Dan Shannon soon arrived on the scene to bumper them all wide and take the win over Stewart and McKinnon. Shannon again grabbed the spoils in heat two, this time forcing a way past the lead battle between McKinnon, Stewart and Dylan Booth. Stewart snatched second on the last lap ahead of former World Champion Alan Haugh on his return to racing.
A Tullyroan Bend melee saw the first attempt to get the Tullyroan Challenge Cup final underway aborted. At the restart Shannon and Haugh contested the lead, before the yellow caution flags came up for a huge turn two crash which eliminated Booth, David Browne and Joe Largey, the latter having gallantly changed an engine after a blow up in practice. Shannon cruised home to take the win and complete his hat-trick, with the minor places all declared null and void due to technical issues at post race scrutineering.
