Despite horrendous weather right across the province, the drivers and spectators fortunately avoided the majority of the rain for the race meeting at Tullyroan Oval on Saturday evening. The feature event was the Moffeett Shield for the Superstox, which fell the way of Craigavon driver Keith McAreavey after a great drive. Recently crowned British Champion Stuart Cochrane from Portadown was victorious in the 2.0 Hot Rods Tullyroan Challenge Cup, whilst Drogheda star Conor Finegan won a lively Ulster Championship battle for the Rookie Bangers. The other feature race wins at the LMC Trade Sales of Dungannon sponsored event fell to Glenavy’s Dan Shannon (ProStocks) and Portadown’s Robbie Wright (1300 Stock Cars).

Fifteen cars came under starters orders for the opening Superstox heat, with an early caution as Paul Hosie and Conor Murphy hit trouble on the Annaghmore Bend. As James Turkington hit the front another gaggle of cars tripped over themselves on the same bend. Star man Lee Davison was chasing hard, and he slipped through to win ahead of Kyle Beattie and Turkington. Heat two saw a brief shower leave the track surface very slippery indeed, with Turkington making use of a very wide line to find extra grip and take a great win over Sean Mark and Gregg Hyndman.
David Beattie was the first to show at the start of the Moffett Shield final, leading for the first seven laps before losing out to a charging Turkington. A huge battle between stars Davison and Beattie was thwarting their progress towards the front, as Keith McAreavey landed on the tail of the leader. Keith wasted little time in edging past to the lead, with Turkington then unfortunately going out soon after. McAreavey was clear out front and took a very impressive win in some style, with Kyle Beattie and David Beattie rounding out the podium. David also received a special award as the top white or yellow grade finisher home.

A slightly depleted field of 2.0 Hot Rods took to the track after the exertions of last weekend’s British Championship, but included a debut for former Superstox champion Denver Grattan in a lovely new Peugeot 206cc. The reverse grid system was in operation, and it was Irish Champion Glenn Bell who raced clear in the opening heat for what looked like an easy win. Mechanical gremlins intervened though, and he dropped out with just a couple of laps to go, handing victory to Allen Cherry over Adam Best and Gary Wilson. Wilson then celebrated his return to the 2.0 Hot Rods with a fine heat two victory, holding off Stuart Cochrane and Cherry all the way home.
A toss of a coin between equal top points scorers Cherry and Wilson gave Allen pole spot, but he got himself all crossed up at the green flag which lost both himself and Wilson valuable ground. Cochrane wasted little time in slipping up the inside to the lead, as a huge battle developed behind between Cherry, Wilson and Adam Best. Cherry broke clear and got on terms with Cochrane, valiantly trying the outside line but to no avail. Cochrane kept his head to record another great win, with Best and Wilson inheriting second and third respectively after Cherry was demoted four places by the Stewards for various misdemeanours during the race.

The Rookie Bangers again fielded a huge grid of cars, with the action lively as always as they raced for the Ulster Championship. There was a red flag early in heat one for a huge home straight crash, and through the carnage Dublin’s Paul O’Connor took the lead and a morale boosting win over Peter McConnell and Josh McKinstry. The second heat saw some more fantastic racing, as the Rookies continue to build their reputation for producing superb entertainment. O’Connor again led, but had Conor Finegan right on his case in the final stages. Finegan tried his best to unseat the leader on the final bend but O’Connor kept his cool to take his second win of the night.
If the heats were lively then the Ulster Championship final was something else, with all sorts of action right across the field. The big grid was whittled right down as the crashing continued, with Christy Bradley going ahead for much of the distance. Finegan came onto him late on, shifting him wide to come through to grab the win and the Ulster title. Bradley and Jack Murray filled out the podium, with Caitlin King receiving a special award as the Most Improved Lady driver from AF Metering Services.

Jamie Hunter impressed last week at Aghadowey in his first ever 1300 Stock Car meeting since graduating from the junior formulas, and he did so once again in heat one as he took a polished win over Robbie Wright and Peter Greer. Greer improved to take the heat two win, with Wright again second after a great last bend hit to remove Michael Logan.
The final saw Hunter lead early on before losing out to Logan’s Toyota Starlet, but Wright soon moved past to take the lead. Logan made an audacious bid to come back with the bumper, but Wright was clear and gone out front. The race was then stopped and declared after a huge turn three shunt for Hunter. The medical and track rescue crews worked for some time with the young driver, extracting him professionally from his car. The good news was that after a night in hospital Jamie was just badly bruised and swollen with thankfully nothing broken. The race was declared at that stage, with Wright taking the win over Greer and Josh McKinstry.

Newcomers in Micheal Smith and David McKinnon, plus the return of former star Conor McElmeel, boosted the ProStocks ranks and they produced three super races. Veteran David Browne looked like taking what would have been a very popular heat one win, only to lose out late on to the fast moving Dan Shannon who took the win over Joe Largey. Heat two saw a clear win for Dylan Booth from the yellow grade, leading home Steven Haugh and Shannon.
Shannon was the man to watch in the final, breaking clear of the star graders to give chase to leader Booth. Dan slipped past with four laps to go to take the win and a huge boost ahead of the British Championship next month. Haugh and Largey completed the top three.

After the opening round of the National Hot Rods Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI, former World Champion Adam Maxwell tops the standings ahead of round one final winner Glenn Bell and recent returnee Thomas Dilly.

In the competitive Stock Rods division, Curtis Greer has jumped to the top of the Maxwell Freight Services NI Points Championship ahead of Stevie McNiece and Jonny Cardwell. The 2018 World Championship qualifying points have now been declared, with McNiece the victor of the year long points battle ahead of Shane McMillan and Greer. The DMC representatives in September's World Final at Hednesford will come from this chart.

To view the latest points, click on 'Drivers' in the menu bar above, then 'Points & Grades' and then select the desired formula from the drop down menu. All drivers should note that, where applicable, their correct grading colour should be applied as laid down in their formula's Rules & Regulations. Checks will be carried out over the coming meetings and offenders may be forced to start from the rear of the field.

Templepatrick’s Gordy McKee was crowned 2018 Lightning Rods Champion of the World at Aghadowey Oval last weekend! From a field of over 30 of the best drivers in the formula, Gordy came through the qualifying heats to land pole position for the final which he then led from start to finish. On a full weekend of championship race action, the other major races saw Portadown’s Stuart Cochrane take a keenly contested British Championship win in the 2.0 Hot Rods, whilst Scotland’s Robbie Armit successfully defended his Ninja Karts European Championship crown after an epic title race.

Saturday evening’s first Lightning Rods World qualifying heat saw reigning World title holder Aaron Stewart get his defence off to the best possible start with a clear win over Gordy McKee, before Randalstown’s Tim Hazlett took the second heat win ahead of Mark McCambridge and Jordan Rochford. The final heat saw Portadown’s Mark Corry take an excellent win, just holding off former champion Nigel Jackson to the line.

The anticipation within the stadium was at fever pitch as thirty cars came under starters orders for the Corry Body Repairs World Championship final, with aggregate points seeing McKee on pole ahead of Stewart, with Jackson and Hazlett occupying row two. McKee quickly settled into the lead ahead of Jackson, with little to separate the two cars. A caution period for a big back straight crash brought them back together, but McKee was again able to edge out an advantage over 2013 World winner Jackson. Nigel was giving it all he had, and he closed right back in when oil went down on the raceway, but McKee again knuckled down to pull clear and take the chequered flag in style and his first ever World title! Jackson was a creditable runner up, with Jonny McMillan surviving a huge race long scrap for the places to take a great third position ahead of Ricky Shaw, Rochford and Essex star Reid Murray.
The World Revenge race saw a reverse of the line up from the World Final, and it was Reid Murray who banished his poor qualifying from the memory by romping home to the victory, with Rochford just pipping Anthony Burgess on the line for second and British Champion Lee Skoyles in third. Aggregate points from the World Final and World Revenge races formed the grid for the Irish Open Championship, which turned into a thriller as the leading stars circulated nose to tail. There was no shifting pole man Murray from the lead though, and he took a very polished victory ahead of Rochford and Jackson to complete a memorable weekend for the Lightning Rods formula.

The 2.0 Hot Rods British Championship was also up for decision over the weekend, with the Antrim based Emerson brothers, Mervyn and Stephen, grabbing both heat victories. Consistency had placed Allen Cherry on pole position for the Clive Richardson Ltd British Championship Final, but he lost out in the opening exchanges as Stuart Cochrane raced ahead. Cherry was pressed by European Champion Adam Hylands, with Hylands eventually moving past to challenge the leader. Hylands arrived on Cochrane’s tail as the laps dwindled down, and despite a spirited challenge on the outside line over the final few laps it was young Portadown star Cochrane who took the chequered flag for a very accomplished British title victory. Hylands was a gallant runner up ahead of Adam Best and Scotland’s World Champion Gordon Alexander.

Sunday’s action for the 2.0 Hot Rods was for the Irish Open Championship, and England’s Damon Wellman put his nightmare trip across to Ulster behind him to take a great win in the opening heat ahead of Wales driver Ryan Morgan and Cochrane. The second qualifier saw Alexander leading Cherry all the way to the flag to record the win, with another Scotsman, Gerry Hendry, impressing in third. Cherry’s consistency earned him pole spot for the Irish Open final, and he made no mistake this time to lead them all into turn one and edge clear out front. Cochrane kept him honest all the way home, but it was to be Cherry’s first major championship win and in some style too. Cochrane and the returning Shane Murray filled out the podium places.

A full field of young 6-11 year old Ninja Kart stars from across the British Isles contested the 2018 LJN Motorsport European Championship, with the qualifying heats falling the way of Irish Champion Daniel Stewart from Portadown and Scotland’s Bailey Millar.
The European Championship final was a fantastic event, with a huge battle for the lead throughout between Scottish aces Charlie Hardie and Robbie Armit and English superstar Kasey Jones. The lead swapped on numerous occasions as the young starlets entertained in no uncertain terms, until a late race suspension following a home straight incident. The race to the flag saw Armit hold on to successfully defend his European title in some style, with Jones in second ahead of Sussex ace Anthony Weaver as the visitors locked out the top positions. The top local driver home was Max Hobson in seventh place.

On Sunday the Irish Open Championship was up for grabs for the young drivers, and Armit continued where he left off on Saturday night with victory in heat one ahead after a superb battle with Jones. Heat two was all about another Scot as Millar romped home with ease ahead of Hardie and England’s Toby Parfitt. The final summed the weekend up for the Ninja Karts, with close action right from the word go and the lead swapped and changed time and again. Millar, Armit and Jones were at it hammer and tongs, until Millar unfortunately went out in a home straight spill. That left Armit and Jones to contest the lead, swapping the premier position over the final laps before racing to the line in amongst a huge bunch of backmarkers. Jones it was who took the win and the Irish Open title ahead of Armit, with Weaver again impressing as he took yet another podium spot in third.

A fantastic field of local 1300 Stock Cars were joined by Scottish based British Champion Paul Ford for the Irish Masters, with chaos kicking off right away early in heat one. Paddy Dempsey got spun to the wall and took some heavy knocks from the passing field. Some fine work from the rescue crews extracted him from his car, and we all wish him a speedy recovery from his injuries. Peter Greer broke free to take the win over Jon McQuillan in his new car and Robbie Wright. Heat two saw debutant Jamie Hunter drive a great race from the white grade to take a fantastic win over Greer and Michael Logan.
The Irish Masters final saw a closed grid formation on points scored, and the bumpers flew in right from the off! Wright hit the front and pulled clear, but his lead was wiped out by a late race caution period. That brought the Stewart brothers, Ryan and Willie, onto his tail, and it was Ryan who went for a do or die into the final turn. Wright was unceremoniously dumped in the Brown Trout Bend wall as Willie Stewart stormed past on the inside for a sensational title win. Ryan Stewart recovered for second ahead of Greer in third.

A great field of 22 Stock Rods took to the grid for the coveted William Cooke Memorial Trophy, held annually in memory of the expert Kilrea driver and engineer. Jonny Cardwell spent much of the opening heat alongside early leader Robert McIlroy, before he made the lead his own to record a great victory over the impressive Samuel Montgomery and Philip Wilson. Curtis Greer took the win in the second heat ahead of defending champ Stevie McNiece, with Irish Champion Victor McAfee in third.
Greer edged clear early on to lead the final, as McNiece, World Champion Marc Morrell and McAfee wrestled over second. Greer really had a stranglehold on this one, racing home to take the superb memorial trophy ahead of Morrell and McAfee.

Saturday night’s support action came from the Superstox with three highly entertaining races. The opener boiled down to a last lap shoot out between long time leader Keith McAreavey, Sean Mark and star man Lee Davison. Davison made his move into the final bend but the trio tangled, with Mark faring the best to get over the line for the win whilst the other two spun out in a truly remarkable finish! Chris McArdle and James Turkington filled the places, before Turkington landed the heat two spoils after the man that looked most likely, Davison, got a puncture within sight of the finish. Kyle Beattie and David Beattie filled the places. In the final Kyle Beattie dispatched big rival Davison early on, and looked really on song for the first time all night. The former Irish Champion scythed through the field to take a morale boosting victory, with David Beattie and a recovered Davison.

The sights and sounds of the Ford Escorts and Anglias of the Classic Hot Rods were in action on Sunday afternoon, with Anthony Morgan grabbing a heat and final double in his pristine Mk2 Escort. He took the final honours with a superb outside line run to pass both welcome Scottish visitor Trevor Harris and Liam Bushe. Harris was the other victor swooping past Bushe to the win as Morgan and Trevor Cusack squabbled behind.

Simpson Race Exhausts are the new headline sponsors of National Hot Rods World Series NI, which begins this Friday night (July 20th) at Ballymena Raceway. The feature race final winner at each round of the series will receive a cash bonus courtesy of Matt Simpson at Simpson Race Exhausts. Having taken six of the top eight spots on the recent World final grid, the World Series NI drivers are on a high at present and this deal is sure to give the series a huge boost.

BTCC ace Simpson, also a former National Hot Rods European Champion, is very enthusiastic about the sponsorship package. “It’s great to be supporting the National Hot Rods Series in Northern Ireland. My business started in short oval racing and it has played a big part in my life. An impressive 18 cars are currently booked in for the opening round of Simpson Race Exhausts World Series NI, where Portadown’s Adam Hylands will begin the defence of his Northern Ireland Championship crown.

In our latest points update, the National Bangers FAST Paintworx DMC Race Promotions Points Championship standing sees defending champ Leonard Dunn continue to top the chart over World Championship Steven Bolton. There is just one meeting remaining for points scoring before our World Final qualifiers are decided, the Micro Teams meeting at Tullyroan Oval on August 12th.

After Saturday's second round of the McElmeel Mobility Services Supreme Series for ProStocks, Joe Largey heads Dan Shannon and William McFaul in the standings ahead of the Grand Final later in the season.
